With Windows 8 (and now also windows 10), Microsoft in their infinite wisdom, have introduced something called Fast Start.

To even begin to explain what a foolish idea we think this was is too big a topic for a blog post, but let’s be clear, it doesn’t seem to spectacularly speed up start up but it does cause problems.

For example if you shut down your PC properly every night and then power it on again in the morning, the computer will behave pretty much like it had never been rebooted at all. Little issues that used to get solved with a shut down and power up are no longer solved because the PC has saved the state of much of the core memory, including any errors it contains.

You have to restart the PC to get a proper reboot, contrary to intuition! We get many, many cases where the user says “its not worth rebooting I already tried that”, except they have shut down, waited a couple of minutes and then powered the machine back on.

We advise an actual restart (start menu > power > restart on Windows 10) and their problems have been fixed.

We turn off “fast start” to improve reliability but we believe this often gets switched back on again, how we don’t know, in a Microsoft update maybe…
